June 15-21, 2019 for educators
Twenty educators from Minnesota will have the opportunity to work with Drs. Karen Erickson and David Koppenhaver to learn skills in assessment and interventions for struggling readers. Educators will learn how to determine what is preventing students from making more efficient learning progress and how to provide interventions appropriate to students' needs. Educators come to camp on June 18th for a full day of training before the campers arrive.
Educators receive professional development and experience the "hands on" learning that is missing from most professional development. Educators have the opportunity to ask questions, brainstorm and reflect with two of the leaders in the field on how to teach all students to read and write. The educators then have the opportunity to go back to their home schools and make a significant difference with the reading and writing instruction of their own students as well as share their new skills with colleagues. Many former Literacy Camp adult participants rate this professional development as "life-changing. "
Applicants are encouraged to apply for scholarships to attend as school teams, so that the skills learned can be supported back in the home district. Although the campers will be teens, the skills learned are applicable to anyone who supports literacy with school-aged students.
Educators will arrive on Saturday, June 16, 2018 for a full-day of training before the campers arrive. Educators can expect to spend 50 hours of learning with practical application during this week. Educators are free to leave after meeting with parents on the morning of Friday, June 22nd. Three graduate credits also will also available from Hamline.
Educators are expected to stay at camp for the entire week. Housing will be in a modern cabin. Meals are family style with lots of snacks available during the day.
